Egyptian stone mosaic — natural marble and limestone cut into pattern work for floors, walls and paving.

Cobbles are the oldest paving idea there is and still the most durable one for vehicle traffic. Tumbled before they are ever laid, they start with softened edges and worn faces, so the dust and heat that punish a smooth exterior floor read here as patina rather than damage. They also solve something no large-format stone can: an irregular field absorbs level changes and awkward geometry that would force cuts and mitres in a slab layout, which makes it the natural surface for driveways, courtyards, garden paths, tree surrounds and the transition where a building meets its landscape.
